Egerton University ordered to retrain Engineering graduates

Egerton University

The Milimani High Court has ordered Egerton University to provide remedial classes for Engineering graduates over the next three months.

This follows the denial by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) to register Engineering graduates from the university over claims that the institution issued unaccredited Engineering courses from 2014 to 2019.

The Court emphasized that the remedial classes align with the recommendations of EBK.

In the ruling delivered virtually on Thursday, August 15, Judge Lawrence Mugambi stated, “The gravamen of the petition is the allegation that the 1st respondent offered unaccredited engineering courses to its students who upon graduation, the Engineers Board of Kenya (3rd Respondent), refused to register as graduate engineers thereby denying them a chance of ever becoming engineers.”

“An order compelling the 1st Respondent to facilitate the Petitioners and all the affected students to undertake remedial courses recommended by the 3rd Respondent. The cost shall be fully covered by the 1st Respondent and the same should be within the next three (3) months or where applicable over such a period as may be individually agreed between each of the affected students and the 1st Respondent,” he added.

Additionally, the Court declared that the Commission for University Education (CUE) will no longer approve or accredit Engineering courses in Kenyan universities without the approval of EBK.

Egerton has been advised to collaborate with EBK and CUE to regulate engineering courses and establish registration requirements, in order to ‘avoid the recurrence of the present standoff’.

The Court emphasized that it will not issue a declaratory order stopping the varsity from ‘offering on-going impugned courses (if any).’
