Mwira Junior Secondary School (JSS), the National Girls’ JSS Soccer winner, is smelling foul play after its players were left out of the team forwarded to represent the country at the East Africa championship in Uganda.
Headteacher Alfred Otieno noted that the dream of flying out was the key motivating factor behind the impressive performance by the Western region champions and it had been unfairly and abruptly cut short.
“All along we knew that our soccer team would be representing the country in the East African championship but we were baffled that a different team was selected to represent the country yet we have worked so hard for this,” he said.
“It is unfortunate and unfair that corrupt officials have killed the dreams and morale of these young girls. This matter should be investigated and the culprits face punishment,” he lamented.
Otieno however assured the girls of his unwavering support despite the circumstances.
He said that the school had already identified many talents and appealed for sponsorship and financial aid from stakeholders and well-wishers to assist them to nurture the girls into pro footballers.

Team Coach Edgar Akhonya attributed the victory to teamwork, hard work and determination, despite a myriad of challenges including insufficient uniform and gear; and logistical issues where the details of a number of players were missing or incorrectly captured in the UPI system.
