Scholar at Jaramogi University lauds appointment of new Education CS

Prof Henry Onderi Director of Institutional Advancement and International Office at JOOUST

A senior Professor at  Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) has congratulated   Julius Ogamba, the newly appointed Education Cabinet Secretary (CS).

Prof Henry L.N Onderi, who is the University’s Director of Institutional Advancement and International Office in a statement dated  August 8,  praised  Ogamba, who was sworn in yesterday at State House.

He noted that Ogamba’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the country’s education sector, which is currently a focal point in national discussions due to its vital role in Kenya’s progress and prosperity.

“Ogamba has assumed the education docket during a critical moment in the history of our country. The sector is currently at the center of national discourse for it is a major ingredient to our progress and desired prosperity,” said Prof. Onderi in a statement.

Prof Onderi acknowledged the government’s efforts in the education sector, including the roll out of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the new university funding model. While recognizing the challenges that have arisen during these implementations, he expressed confidence in  Ogamba’s ability to stabilize the sector.

“It is important to note that the government has rolled out various programmes to take this sector forward. The roll out is not devoid of challenges that make a majority of education stakeholders worried of government commitment and capacity to iron them out,” he said.

The Professor  further highlighted on-going issues, such as the urgent need for more teachers to fill existing shortages, inconsistent and inadequate funding for primary and secondary education, and financial difficulties facing higher education institutions, especially public universities.

“Also, there is looming disquiet regarding employment of additional teachers to bridge shortages, stifled and unreliable capitation for primary and secondary school students; and a cash crunch at the higher institutions of learning particularly public universities,” said Prof Onderi.

However, he expressed optimism, stating that during his vetting by the Parliamentary committee,  Ogamba acknowledged these challenges and expressed his readiness to address them as he assumes office.

“But there is a glimmer of hope. When  Ogamba faced the Parliamentary vetting committee, he admitted that he was aware of these challenges and was ready to tackle them upon assuming office,” he added.
