Secondary school national ball games kick off tomorrow in Kisii

KSSSA President Kipchumba Maiyo with Kenya Academy of sports' Director of Research John Okwemba at Kisii School during the inspection of the fields for national ball games competitions.

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term two nationals will kick off on Sunday, August 4, 2024 in Kisii County.

According to KSSSA President Kipchumba Maiyo, the competitions will be spread over three venues; Gusii Stadium, Kisii School and Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School.

Flanked by Nyanza Regional Director of Education (RDE) Lawrence Karuntimi, Kisii County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Chirchir, Kisii County KESSHA chairperson Joyce Orioki, and Sports Secretary Tom Odhiambo, Maiyo said all systems had been put in place for the smooth running of the event.

“We have inspected all facilities and we are satisfied by their adequate preparations,” said Maiyo.

He briefed that his officers had trained all referees, umpires and other officials, including first aiders, and anticipated a positive spirit of competition from the teams across the country.

Odhiambo revealed that most of the schools were on their way to Kisii County, adding that the referees clinic for rugby and basketball will take place today because the officials were late to report on Thursday.

Orioki, who is Principal Nyabururu Girls National School, said her school had prepared well to accommodate the female participants throughout the period from 4th August and to 8th of the same month.

“We have enough dormitories, water and security for our girls whom I expect to observe a high degree of discipline during their stay with us,” she said.

Chirchir expressed his excitement at hosting the national sports fete and appealed to all residents to turn up in large numbers to welcome the visitors from the rest of the country.

He thanked Governor Simba Arati for his officers’ tireless efforts to coordinate with officials from the Ministry of Education and hoped the event will come out successfully.

Kisii County Police Commander Charles Keses assured teachers, students and the public about their security during and after the extravaganza, cautioning drivers and bodaboda riders against careless road use during the season.
