The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Elgeyo Marakwet branch has decried the persistent insecurity along the Kerio Valley belt.
Branch Executive Secretary Paul Biwott lamented that despite the ongoing security operation, bandits continue to cause terror in the region.
Addressing the press, he said many learners might miss the end term exams even as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education preparations are affected.
“We are worried about the ongoing banditry in Kerio Valley. Many learners might not sit their end term exams and we fear preparations for KCPE will also get affected,” he said.
According to him, learning activities have greatly been affected in the region, many families fleeing their homes for fear of attacks.
Biwott also expressed fear many teachers might not report back to school next term, saying the formation of the Kerio Valley Sub-county has not brought any change.
“Although Kerio Valley had been gazette as a sub-county, banditry has continued in the area. Many teachers might not report back next term as a result of this problem. As a union, we ask President William Ruto to end the vice as he had promised,” added Biwott.
KUPPET now wants Ruto to fulfill his promise to end the problem, saying the killings witnessed in the area this week have caused fear among locals.
2 people were killed and hundreds of livestock stolen in a banditry attack carried out in Kapkobil area 3 days ago, with security personnel coming under fire for doing little to avert the attacks.
