The body of 21-year-old Marcus Nyaga, a student at Kirinyaga University, was today found in the Thiba River near Kutus Town, located in the Gichugu constituency.

According to Gichugu Sub-County Police Commander Johnson Wachira, local divers discovered his body several meters away from the spot where he drowned.

On Sunday, the second-year Bachelor of Education student was swimming with a friend near Kutus Bridge when a tragic incident took place.

According to witnesses, including local resident Samuel Mugane, the event occurred around 4 p.m. The student’s friend alerted others, drawing the attention of locals and the area’s assistant chief to the scene.

Mugane observed that Marcus had left his clothes undisturbed near the riverbank before going into the water. The distressing sight stunned Kirinyaga University students and Marcus’ family as they watched his lifeless body being pulled out and placed in a police vehicle.

Marcus, who hails from Chuka, had his family camping by the river since the night of the incident, anxiously awaiting the recovery of his body.

This marks the second drowning in the Thiba River within two months; on May 16, 2024, a third-year building engineering student also drowned, with his body being discovered more than ten kilometers away in Ngumbatha village.

The body of Marcus Nyaga has since been taken to Kibugi Funeral Home, where it will remain until a postmortem examination is conducted, as confirmed by Gichugu police commander Johnson Wachira.
