The Ministry of Education (MoE) has cancelled all university fees which were to be paid by first year students joining various universities from September this year and instructed students to wait for new guidelines.

In a press statement dated July 19, Higher Education and Research Principal Secretary, Dr Beatrice Muganda Inyangala said the ministry will, on August 5, 2024, be issuing new fees to be paid by students.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents/guardians of students, and, students that the fees to be paid by students and their families/guardians as relates to the full cost of each degree programme as previously/communicated in the admission letters is hereby nullified, and, does not apply anymore,” reads the statement.

“Beginning August 5, 2024, the respective universities will communicate the new fees to be paid by each student as household contribution.”

The directive which affects the 2023 KCSE cohorts who were placed in various universities by KUCCPS also assured students of their placement in various academic programmes as intact.

“It is also important for the students and their parents/guardians to note that their placement in the respective academic programmes remains unchanged. We wish to confirm that their places in the academic programmes are firmly secured,” reads the statement.

Last year, the government rolled out a new higher university funding model which placed students into four categories with various funding needs.

These categories include; vulnerable, extremely needy, needy and less needy.
