Grade 5 learner in Nakuru killed by car as she walks to school

The late Margaret Wambui was a Grade 5 student.

The teenage girl aged 13 died instantly in the crash in the early hours of Tuesday morning after she was hit by a vehicle on her way to school in Njoro, Nakuru County.

Beth Nyambura was unable to control her tears while recounting how her daughter Margaret Wambui’s life was tragically cut short by a 21-year-old man allegedly driving under the influence.

“My children woke up around 5am. I prepared them for school and they left at around 6.30am. Within less than three minutes of getting out of my sight, Wambui died,” said Nyambura.

Wambui, a Grade Five student at Mutirima Primary School, was with her younger sister, who is in Grade One at the same school, when the accident occurred.

“My younger daughter came home walking saying that her sister had been killed. She told me that a vehicle had run over them. She had injuries in her hands and legs,” said Nyambura.

Peter Ngugi, a neighbour who witnessed the accident, stated that he hurried to the road upon hearing a loud bang, which he initially thought had been caused by a skidding vehicle.

“The vehicle was stationary in the middle of the road. It was then driven off at high speed but veered off the road when it got near the children. The younger girl was thrown off the road while the elder one was run over,” said Ngugi.

He described rushing to the scene and discovering Wambui, fighting for her life with broken limbs. Tragically, she passed away before they could reach the nearby hospital.
