Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is conducting an assessment aimed at finding out the number of primary teachers with Diploma and Bachelor’s degrees for possible posting in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and secondary schools.
The Commission is also likely to use the data of the teachers with higher academic qualifications to replace secondary school teachers who have exited TSC payroll effective July 1, 2024 through retirement.
n a memo signed by Director for Teacher Professional Management at TSC Dr Mugwuku Nthamburi Aftra, addressed to all regional, and county directors of education referenced TSC/DTPM/CDS/40/VOL.II/115 and seen by Education News, the data of these teachers should be submitted on or before July 11, 2024.
The Commission directed that the data should be submitted in terms of numbers, segregated by county and categorised as follows; first, holders of the required Bachelor’s and Diploma certificates with a minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE and a minimum of C Plus in each of the two teaching subjects or equivalent.

Second, holders of required Bachelor’s and Diploma degrees with a minimum mean grade of C plain in KCSE and minimum of C+ in each of the two teaching subject.
Third, holders of required Bachelor’s and Diploma degrees with a minimum mean grade of C plain at KCSE and minimum of C plain) in each of the two teaching subject, and and lastly holders of required Bachelor’s and Diploma degrees with a minimum mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE and below with two teaching subjects without regard to the grades in the teaching subjects.
The regional, county directors are further asked to collect the documents to support the qualifications of teachers.
The number of primary school teachers with Diplomas and Degrees stands at 40, 916, and 28, 226 respectively according to the recent data by the Economic Survey 2024 published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
