President Ruto says 26,000 JSS intern teachers will be confirmed this month

President William Ruto

It is a huge relief for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) intern teachers after President William Ruto today announced that they will be employed as part of the review by the National Treasury on proposed budget cuts from Ksh347 billion to Ksh117 billion to protect key programmes.

The President while addressing the Nation at State House revealed that the intern teachers will be employed together with their counterparts in medical after an outcry by the citizens who pleaded that key sectors be exempted in the budget cuts brought about by the rejection of signing to law the Finance Bill 2024 by Ruto.

“We will be proposing budget cuts of Sh Sh 177 billion and borrow the difference. We will use the funds to fund of some of critical areas that the people of Kenya has asked me to protect, they include, the hiring of JSS and medical interns,” he said.

“Whatever we are going to borrow will increase the budget deficit from 3.3 per cent to 4.6 per cent of the GDP, but still lower than last year.”

The intern teachers had started to worry about their confirmation into Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms which was supposed to take place this month as in the proposed cuts by the treasury seen by Education News Teachers Service Commission (TSC) budget had been reduced by KSH18 billion which would differ the hiring of teachers.

Also, the State Department for Higher Education has received a boost as President Ruto said that there will be additional funds remitted to the new funding model which took effect in the sub sector last year.
