Why live one day at a time?

Victor Ochieng'

Brethren, due to various vicissitudes of life, it is possible to look at what the future holds and get worried, but as it is sagely said: Worry is wasteful. Just live one day at a time. Leave the rest of the uncertain days in the infallible Hands of God Almighty: the one who provides the great integument around humankind. This is what is addressed in Matthew 6:34, we read: “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

God, The Absolute Whole, in His majesty and might, feeds beautiful birds that fly in the air and perch on trees. God, The Architectonic Good clothes green grass and lovely lilies in the fields with sartorial elegance and grace. God, The Unmoved Mover, provides drops of dew to drench the clothes of the earth. He releases torrents of rain to pelt the ground, and to grapple with the fecundity of the soil. God, The One Above, regulates several seasons, and makes a way in the wilderness. The one who stores the riches in glory, also owns cattle on a 1000 hills. In the same token, He brightens dark alleys with bright light. Hallelujah!

Therefore, any strife in life does not scare us. For through the aegis of Jesus, we can begin and win. For He has powers to calm the raging storm. You will have to be still, and through faith know that He is God full of strength. He will take care of your bills, health, wealth, family and friends. Just trust in Christ one day at a time. Maybe, there are people whose resolutions have been adversely affected. Some are wondering whether they will manage to complete the projects they started at some point in life.

Some employees have been laid-off or retrenched at their places of work. Some are jobless because perhaps times are tough. But Dr. Robert Schuller penned: Tough times never last, but tough people do. When schools reopen, as a parent or guardian, you scratch your head a lot, when you think of ways to defray school fees. But you can anchor your trust on Christ Jesus – the hope of glory. Too true. He remains the sure source of hope and help.

There is no need to be anxious. Do not allow tension to tighten like a brittle rope. Do not forget. Sometimes, unnecessary stress is caused by being here, yet you want to be there. Just live one day at a time. Do not allow thoughts about the distant future steal peace from your head and heart. Accept and reflect on the powerful lyrics of this song – One Day at a Time by Merriam Bellina.

Show me the stairway,                                                                                                                                                                                             I have to climb                                                                                                                                                                                                   Lord for my sake,                                                                                                                                                                                                  teach me to take                                                                                                                                                                                                   One day at a time

One day at a time sweet Jesus                                                                                                                                                                       That’s all I’m asking of You                                                                                                                                                                                 Just give me the strength                                                                                                                                                                                    To do every day                                                                                                                                                                                                  what I have to do                                                                                                                                                                                        Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus                                                                                                                                                                            And tomorrow may never be mine                                                                                                                                                                        Lord help me today,                                                                                                                                                                                                  show me the way                                                                                                                                                                                                     One day at a time

It’s worse now, than then                                                                                                                                                                           Pushing and shouting                                                                                                                                                                                        That’s crowded my mind                                                                                                                                                                                        So, for my sake,                                                                                                                                                                                                          teach me to take                                                                                                                                                                                                        One day at a time

Lord help me today,                                                                                                                                                                                          show me the way                                                                                                                                                                                                  One day at a time

In the whole scheme of things, living one day at a time will also help you execute difficult tasks. You just need to break them down into small pieces. Simply do what you ought to do right now. Do it well. Then, move to the next thing. Follow the process, not the prize. Pay the price. Sacrifice. The road to back-to-back championships is just that, a road. You travel along the road in steps, in strides. As it is sagely said: Inch by inch, everything is a cinch.

This is what I call: The Law of Small Chunks. By a yard, it is hard, but inch by inch, everything is a cinch. Even excellence is a matter of steps and strides. Excelling at this one, then that one, and then the one after that. A great Athenian thinker called Aristotle observed, “We become what we repeatedly do; excellence is not an act but a habit.”

Then, sometimes, it is good to think about now. Making it from meal to meal, break to break, checkpoint to checkpoint, paycheck to paycheck – just live one day at a time. When you get it right even the hardest things become manageable. The process is relaxing. Under its influence, we need not to panic; for even mammoth tasks become just a series of simple parts. As a copy editor, I have come to realise that the only way to beat the bone-chilling editorial deadlines, is to handle one chapter at a time.

Moreover, those who are out there who yearn to be putative authors, most of you shy away from writing a book because the process looks like a Herculean task. It looks like a labyrinth path strewn with thorns and thistles. You wonder how writing wizards weave a lot of words, then collect and collate ideas into books. Ryan Holiday argues in The Obstacle is the Way: By and large, we are A-to-Z thinkers, fretting about A, obsessing over Z, yet forgetting all about B through Y.

This is the conclusion of the matter. Listen to wise words of the penman. Replace fear with the process. Depend on it. Lean on it. Learn from it. Trust in it. Take your time. Do not rush. Do not crash. Some problems are harder than others. Deal with the ones in front of you first. Come back to the others later. You will get there. The process is about doing the right things, right now. Not worrying about what might happen later, results, or the whole picture. As you strive to arrive, put your trust on Christ.
