MP asks professionals to guide youth on career choices

Marakwet East MP Kangogo Bowen has urged professionals to offer support to students from the area on careers, observing that youth have remained jobless after doing unmarketable courses in universities.

Speaking in the constituency, he said it is sad for parents to invest in their children’s education only for them to remain jobless.

“Many youth are now jobless after pursuing courses which are less marketable yet some parents sold their property to educate them. This is sad,” he said, listing the courses that he believed the youth should pursue to become job creators and not job seekers.

He underscored the importance of technical skills, urging parents to enroll their children in technical and vocational training institutes.

“Technical training is the way to go. Technical skills enable one to become a job creator rather than a job seeker. I hereby urge parents from this constituency to enroll their children in technical institutes,” added Bowen, promising to fully support those who inclined to his proposal.

Youth unemployment in Kenya is as high as 35 per cent (4.5 million young men and women), compared to the overall national unemployment rate of 10 per cent. 75 per cent of the Kenyan population is aged below 35 years.
