46,000 JSS teachers should be confirmed instead of increasing MPs’ salaries, Cherargei says

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei.

Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has faulted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for increasing salaries for public servants including the President and Members of Parliament when they said they had no money for confirming Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) intern teachers and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) intern doctors.

The Senator while speaking today at the Senate proceedings said the move to increase money for public servants by SRC will sabotage the leader’s relationship with the public.

“We invited SRC to the House, they told us there is no money to increase for UHC doctors’ or JSS but they are quick to increase money for MPs to create discontentment. We never requested for increment of salaries, SRC is abusing its own power by trying to set us up against the public,” he said.

There has been outcry from the people over the high cost of living and over taxation by the government which saw President William Ruto decline from signing to law the Finance Bill 2024 and he announced that there will be a cut of KSh346billion in expenditure across the three arms of government courtesy of the supplementary estimates by the National Treasury to ensure that we live within our means.

Consequently, Ruto directed the National treasury to instruct all the Principal Secretaries in different ministries to cut down the Financial Year 2024/25 budgets across all activities in bid to close the financing gap of KSh346billion in order to align the Budget to the revised Fiscal Framework.

As a result, the 46,000 JSS intern teachers who have been eagerly awaiting their confirmation into Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms since 2023 might miss out on hiring as in the proposed Budget cuts by the National Treasury seen by Education News, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has seen a reduction of KSh18.9 billion with an explanation of deferring the confirmation of interns to PnP terms and hiring of JSS intern teachers.
