Eronge Primary School in Rigoma Ward of Nyamira County is in serious need of improved infrastructure before learners resume classes this week after mid-term break.

The head teacher of the school, Veronicah Ondieki said that her learners have been using dilapidated classrooms for a long time expecting help from the Ministry of Education, all in vain.

“Apart from very dust classrooms with rusty rooftops, the learners are congested in classrooms and this  risks their health,” she said.

Flanked by the Chairman of the School Management Committee they said that the situation was worsened by recent floods that swept school pit latrines.

They chairman said the learners were sharing the few latrines with teachers saying that did not augur well.

He said the capitation money sent by the MoE was not enough to meet the high demand of needs to develop the school.

The chairman appealed to both national, county government and well-wishers to help them renovate the school.

“This environment of old classrooms filled with many flies from the damaged washrooms is stressful to the pupils and their teachers,” he said.

A visit to the school revealed few and broken desks in classrooms and unfenced compound with cows roaming in the compound.

Most Parents who spoke to Education News threatened not to take their children back to school to avoid danger when it reopens this week unless the weak walls and roofs are repaired.

“Our children’s lives are precious and we cannot expose them to danger when we have alternative schools where we can transfer them,” they said.

They accused the head teacher of lacking creativity to improve the school saying there are some activities like planting beautiful flowers and erecting live fence around the school without using money.

“It is not everything that needs money. The head teacher can easily instructs learners to plant locally available flowers to beautify the school,” said a parent, Peyer Mong’are.

The parents asked Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo to visit the school and witness for himself its pathetic state.

They alleged that the MP has been criss-crossing the constituency opening newly constructed modern classrooms constructed by NG-CDF but wondered why he has neglected them for a long time.
