Top universities from the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) have confirmed their participation in the forthcoming Nyanza Regional International Investment Conference.

The universities, through the Vice Chancellors (VCs), confirmed their participation during a preparatory meeting attended by ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owalo and his education counterpart Ezekiel Machogu in Kisumu.

Among the varsities represented at the meeting included Maseno University, Kisii University, Tom Mboya University, Trans Mara University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and Rongo University.

Machogu and Owalo (below) speak at the forum.

Addressing the dons, Machogu said institutions of higher learning should take the lead in solving major problem bedeviling the society such as ignorance and disease.

Machogu said upper level developing nations such as Singapore and India have taken that direction through research and innovation.

He pointed out that the same nations have immensely invested in blue collar and not white collar jobs, encouraging local universities to have home grown solutions to problems affecting Kenyans.

He said the CBC is here to stay, noting that the curriculum subjects the mind to critical thinking.

The forum was well attended by representatives of various universities.

He urged the youth to pursue technical courses  to be relevant in the job market, revealing that the government is now entrenching the concept of recognition of prior learning (RPL) in order to nurture latent skills.

On his part, Owalo said the conference will unlock the economic potential of the Nyanza region.

The conference will bring together professionals from across the counties of Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Siaya.

The conference will be held on June 28 and June 29, 2024 in Kisumu and will officially be opened by President Wiliam Ruto, who is also expected to deliver the key note address.
