KUSNET cry foul over teachers’ stagnation

The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has decried the stagnation of some of its members in certain job groups.

KUSNET Secretary General James Torome subsequently called for an urgent meeting between the members and the employer in order to iron out contentious issues affecting them.

Speaking in Vihiga County Torome said proposals for career progression have not been implemented since 2018.

Torome said the proposals are laying somewhere gathering dust.

Torome however lauded the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for engaging some 6000 teachers whom he said have so far been deployed to various schools.

He similarly lauded the TSC for introducing allowances for members who are using walking aides.

He said those using one crutches will be entitled to an allowance of KSh20,000 per month.

Torome said those using walking frames will also earn the same amount.

“Those who engage both hands while walking and those using frames will also be placed in the same category,” he said.

Torome advised that the allowances will be backdated to March this year.

He said they should follow the requisite requirements for them to be considered for allowances.

Torome said they will also be exempted from paying taxes.

The special needs teachers earlier the Collective Bargaining Agreement which is yet to be implemented.

They said many members have stagnated for many years.

The members said those handling regular schools were promoted to very high grades.

They said handling learners in special schools is not a walk in the park.
