Lamu County urgently requires 200 more additional teachers to end understaffing in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the region, Education News has established.
Speaking to Education News from Lamu town recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Lamu Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Shaibu asked the government to recruit more teachers in the country and deploy them in the area, further adding that the move would enhance effective teaching and learning.
He further disclosed that currently the county has 92 registered JSS with 150 streams against 220 teachers who are not enough compared to the ever increasing number of students.

“200 more additional teachers are needed in the region to reduce the overworking task teachers are currently facing,” he noted.
Shaibu, however attributed low academic standards in schools and dismal performance in national examinations to shortage of teachers.
At the same time, he asked education stakeholders in the county to work as a team by ensuring that they equip the schools with necessary learning facilities to enable learners and teachers to stay in conducive environment.
However, he lamented that many schools in the area still lack modern infrastructure, a trend which is bent to defeat teachers’ efforts to offer quality teaching to the children.
“You should therefore focus seriously in education issues in order to enhance education levels in the region, the Executive Secretary told education stakeholders in the county.
