Machakos County Executive Committee Member for Health Dr Daniel Yumbya has issued an urgent appeal to the national government and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui to expedite measures to address a rapidly advancing gulley threatening a multi-storey dormitory at Kathiani Girls High School.

The school, which houses over 1,400 students, is facing significant danger as the erosion encroaches ever closer to one of the dorms.

During a visit to the school accompanied by MP Mbui, the CECM who also serves as the Board of Governors Chairman at the institution stressed on the immediate need for intervention to prevent a potential disaster.

“Kathiani Girls is built on a hilly area and during heavy rains it’s risky because there is a gulley near the dormitories that is making its way to the facility. Only gabions will save the building from collapsing,” Yumbya said, underscoring the critical nature of the situation.

The advancing gulley, exacerbated by the recent heavy rains experienced in the country, poses a severe risk to the safety and well-being of the students.

Yumbya added that if the situation is left unaddressed, the structural integrity of the dormitories could be compromised, leading to catastrophic consequences.

Mbui, on his part, said that he is sure situation can be handled by the national government using the disaster management.

“The rains caused havoc all over the country but this situation should be treated as an emergency,” said Mbui.
