Machogu calls for truce between UoN Council and estranged VC

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has asked University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Stephen Kiama and the University Council to stop wrangles and work together to achieve the objectives of the university.

The CS, addressing the media today after TVET@100 breakfast meeting at Kabete National Polytechnic, told the two parties to set aside their differences for the betterment of the university.

“I am aware of what is happening in the university; I am calling on the VC and council to be focussed and support each other,” the CS said.

UoN academic staff led by Dr Richard Bosire on Tuesday urged the CS to intervene and end the continuous wrangles in the institution.

“We cannot solve this issue if Machogu does not bring these people together and read the riot act. We are urging him to take action and we are willing to support him,” said Bosire.

UoN
University of Nairobi VC Prof Stephen Kiama has been on and off the helm of the institution. Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has now called for a ceasefire.

Bosire observed that in order for the university to focus on its key mandate, the government should take swift appropriate action to end the wrangles.

The disagreements have seen the VC Professor Kiama sent on compulsory leave by the council twice in just six months, its chairman Prof Amukowa Anangwe saying the latest decision was reached on April 19, 2024.

Professor Ayub Njoroge was appointed to take over from Kiama on an acting capacity, but the latter stayed put and said he is going nowhere. His supporters, including Dr Maloba Wekesa, maintain that the council is illegally constituted as the appointments are political.

Curiously, the embattled VC was among managers of public universities who attended President William Ruto’s State House meeting yesterday.
