Machogu challenges varsities to offer solutions to problems facing society

Universities across the world have been asked to work in partnerships towards finding immediate solutions for tipping issue like climate change, loss of biodiversity and the life of other species that are in danger.

While delivering keynote opening speech in London Yon May 14 during the Association of Common Wealth Universities Summit, the CS for Education Dr Ezekiel Machogu underscored the pivotal role played by Universities for the welfare of humanity.

“Higher education institutions have much to say and do regarding the progress of humanity towards sustainable development goals,” he said.

He revealed that Kenya Universities are ready to collaborate with Universities in the rest of the world to embrace education programmes and research activities that will enhance and foster the formation of new generations that will be aware of the necessary global transformation and be determined to undertake them.

Machogu petitioned for need to Universities to transit to inter-and transdisciplinary programmes and research projects in order for researchers to be able to grasp existing problems in all of their complexities, educate learners with more holistic view of the world and co- produce knowledge among education disciplines.

He appealed to governments to fund Universities adequately to enable them undertake research geared towards global socio-economic inequalities that lead to severe impoverishment of some countries.

The world has been heading towards a growth of inequality in the distribution of income and resource within and between countries and researched knowledge will stand tall to solve these anomalies,” he said.

He added that institutions for higher education are found in every country and are characterised by their freedom of thought, research and trusted by their societies, Machogu challenged Nations to educate young generations to be conscious, responsible and responsive citizens of their countries.

He asked world governments to provide financial and security support to Universities to enable them generate knowledge through relevant research that will lead to an understanding of problems in all their complexities and bring about new paradigms for human growth and development and designing of both political and technological ways forward.

He highlighted the plight of Kenya’s zeal in the embracement of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in all levels of education because it involves the learners in experimental activities that take the take them out into the world where the problems are and involve them in both hand -on research and intervention programmes that provide solutions for emerging predicaments like natural hazards that befall communities.

He expressed optimism for Universities to be global hubs of peace and coexistence because of the immersive knowledge they invest and store in human resource.
