All Kiambu Constituency schools safe for reopening, says MP

Kiambu MP Machua Waithaka leads by example during a tree-planting exercise in the constituency's public schools. He said the schools are safe for reopening.

Kiambu Constituency public primary and secondary schools are safe for learners as per an inspection report by area MP Waithaka Machua.

According to the MP, the children can report back to school as classrooms and ablution blocks have been assessed and given a clean bill of health.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Education (MoE), they formed a taskforce to inspect the condition of all the schools in the constituency and confirmed that learners will be safe as the ongoing rains and floods have not destroyed the school infrastructure.

“In Kiambu Constituency, we do not have major issues in our schools that can hinder their reopening. We have inspected the classrooms and also the toilets and they are intact,” he said, excepting Kongo Primary School which had a minor issue of flooding.

He announced this when he joined residents and sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia, chiefs, Samima Investment Limited and other stakeholders in planting over 3,000 indigenous trees in all Kiambu schools.

“The exercise to plant trees will continue where we are encouraging learners to adopt trees and ensure they grow as this will help in increasing our tree cover as per the government directive and address issues of climate change,” the legislator said.

He added that through the NGCDF, residents affected by the ongoing rains and floods are receiving foodstuff and non-food items to help through the difficult time.

“We have some people who are affected by the floods in our schools and they will be relocated to our ICT hub centres as we address their situations,” he added.

Through the NGCDF, Machua has embarked on changing the face of all primary schools where new gates have been constructed, gabros and tiles laid and roofing and painting redone.

“All schools will be having a new look like those of academies. This is to motivate our learners and to have a conducive environment for learning. All public primary schools have a feeding programme courtesy of food for education organizations through a tap to eat programme. This has also been extended to public secondary schools,” he said.
