There will be no extension for Term Two for both primary and secondary schools, Principal Secretary for Basic Education Dr Belio Kipsang has revealed.

The PS in a circular dated May 9, 2024 addressing the regional, county, and sub- county education directors seen by Education News directed them to ensure that schools in their jurisdiction should devise a plan to recover the time lost as a result to delays in schools’ reopening due to the floods experienced across the country.

He directed the heads of institutions to develop and implement strict safety protocols, including measures to mitigate the risk of flooding and ensure the structural integrity of buildings  as well do the necessary repairs and maintenance to address any damages caused by the adverse weather conditions.

The latest directive from Dr Kipsang comes a few days after the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu during his visit to Karen C Girls Secondary school in Langata, Nairobi County to assess the effects of floods revealed that the government would consider extending the second term owing to the extended closure.

“It has been two weeks of postponement. We will look at it, particularly for those in From Four, and see how we can recover by extending the term for a few days,” Machogu stated on Thursday, May 11.

The Ministry also asked schools to adjust learning hours should the on-going nationwide heavy rains affect learning.

Schools have, however, been directed to maintain the 6am to 6pm guidelines as far as school transportation is concerned.

Schools are set to reopen on Monday, May 13 after forced closure that was necessitated by the floods.
