How retired staff under BoM terms suffer silently as they chase pensions

Pensioners have had a hard time chasing their dues from the National treasury, especially former MoE employees.

The non-teaching staff in secondary schools who were employed under Board of Management (BoM) have narrated the agony they have gone through in their quest to get retirement benefits for the last five years.

One of them, Ibrahim Godana, a former typist and chief shop steward in Marsabit County has bitterly lamented that he has not received a single penny from the Ministry of Education (MoE) since 2019 when he retired.

Godana, who wrote to Education News, noted that despite being employed as per the terms and regulations agreed upon between the MoE and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) between 1983 and 2019, nothing has materialized to date.

“We have failed to understand the cause of the MoE failing to pay us our gratuity since 2019 to date as usually done to our fellow colleagues who retired before 2019, bearing in mind that we have delivered our services competently for a continuous period between 1983 to 2019, like me,” said Godana.

He stated that it has caused them psychological torture since they are unable to even educate their children, resulting in them  dropping out of school.

“Why penalize and punish us for not paying us our retirement benefits?  Kindly, can authorities concerned intervene to save us from this total frustration?” posed Godana.

“We have on several occasions visited the 7th floor of  Jogoo House to inquire but always in vain. We end up incurring more cost by travelling all the way from Moyale to Nairobi. Those officers within that office are not cooperating, telling us they are waiting (for the money) from  Treasury,” he added.
