Learning in Junior Secondary School (JSS) might not take place tomorrow as their teachers plan for a demonstration on reopening day to force their employer to reconsider their plight.
According to letters written to various Officer Commanding Stations (OCSs) in several parts of the country seen by Education News, the ‘moguls’ as they are commonly referred to will be presenting their petitions to various TSC county offices tomorrow as their demonstrations hit a climax.
Through their respective Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) branches countrywide, they will be demanding that TSC withdraws its appeal and convert all JSS intern teachers to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms.
“Following the Employment and Labour Relations Court judgment by Hon. Justice Ongaya on the legality of internship under Teachers Service Commission, we as KUPPET/JSS teachers of Nandi County hereby give notice to the Kenya Police that we will hold a demo along Namgoi-Kapsabet Town Road up to the TSC offices in Kapsabet Town,” reads a letter signed by KUPPET Nandi Executive Secretary Paul Rotich addressed to the OCS Kapsabet.
Similar letters, most of them dated between April 24, 2024 and April 26, 2024, were written by KUPPET Narok and signed by the branch Executive Secretary Charles Ng’eno, KUPPET Kisumu signed by branch Executive Secretary Zablon Awange, KUPPET Kwale signed by branch Executive Secretary Leonard Oroje, KUPPET Elgeyo Marakwet signed by branch Executive Secretary Paul Kibor, and KUPPET Nakuru.
“The purpose of the demonstration is to demand that TSC withdraws its appeal on the ruling, call upon TSC to honour the court ruling and confirm all JSS interns, and call upon TSC to compensate all the JSS interns, as directed by the court ruling for the period they have served,” said Ng’eno of Narok in his letter dated April 26, 2024.
“The purpose of this letter is to notify the police of the said demonstration and if possible to provide security to the JSS ‘Moguls’ as they pressurize the TSC employer,” added Zablon Awange of Kisumu in his letter to OCS Kisumu Central Police Station.
