Over 7000 students in Laikipia County have received a boost in nutrition through the distribution of porridge flour, courtesy of the efforts of the First Lady’s office, spearheaded by Rachel Ruto.

Speaking during the flagging off of the food aid consignment, Laikipia County Deputy Governor Reuben Kamuri, said that the 250 bales of flour would play a crucial role in combating malnutrition among school children in the region.

“We are pleased to have received this vital food aid, which is poised to make a positive impact on the lives of learners throughout the county. With 250 bales of porridge flour, we anticipate benefiting over 7,000 students,” he said.

He added that the provision of porridge would ensure that pupils do not miss out on their education due to hunger, applauding the initiative for its timeliness and potential to enhance student well-being.

Edward Ngaira, Secretary of Mercy Works at the Office of the First Lady, reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to eradicating hunger among learners in Laikipia, emphasizing the link between nutrition and educational success.

“The First Lady is deeply committed to supporting families and children facing food insecurity. I ask other partners to join us in driving initiatives that ensure these vulnerable children are well-fed and able to stay in school,” he said.

He called for collaborative efforts to boost food production as a sustainable approach to addressing hunger within the region. “The key to tackling food insecurity lies in agriculture. Laikipia’s fertile land provides a solid foundation for agricultural activities, offering not just food security but also opportunities for job creation,” he said.

Habitat for Humanity Kenya’s Internal Adviser, Koome Kiragu, echoed the call for increased donor support to expand the reach of the initiative and benefit more students.

“The distribution of flour is expected to reach all schools in Laikipia County, ensuring a widespread impact on learner nutrition,” he said.
