Only two made it to Senior and Chief Principal in Kisii in recent promotions, says academic

Principals at a meeting at Kisii School. Only two in the region were promoted to Senior and Chief Principal in recent promotions.

A senior education researcher Dr Charles Kengere has said out of 36,000 positions advertised by TSC, only two made it to Chief and Senior Principal in Kisii.

He attributed the disparity to lack of passion in the region to advance where principals dilute their standing by concentrating on small side hustles like shop-keeping and Matatu business instead of spending time proving their professional capabilities.

He asked teachers to bring to the table all their professional experiences like sports administration in order to attract career progression.

He was addressing secondary school principals in one of the hotels in Kisii during a friends’ get-together party, asking them to forget about bribing their way into higher office.

The principals were asked to further their education to enable them get promotions easily rather than wait for luck to move from a grade to another.

“As much you would like to be lifted, make yourself easy to carry by advancing your education instead of remaining in your comfort zones,” said Kengere.

According to Kisii County TSC offices, the region has a deficit of 72 principals as lack of qualified teachers to serve in headship capacities is aggravated by academic stagnation.

During the latest promotions of principals into higher job grades, it was only Pamela Obuya of Amasago Secondary School who was elevated to Chief Principal. The only other post of Senior Principal went to Benson Orina of Amaiko Secondary School in Gucha South Sub-county.

Orina’a colleagues congratulated him for the elevation, saying that he has been an active member in both academic and extra-curricular activities.

“He deserves the post and we hope he will continue being active in sports to take the county forward,” said Samson Otwere, the new principal of Mariwa Secondary School.
