Bungoma teacher kills self due to ‘huge debts’

Chwele Girls High School.

Chwele Girls High Director of Studies committed suicide by throwing himself into a moving vehicle outside the school gate on Friday March, 22 due to accumulated debts allegedly owed by multiple lenders.

The school administration confirmed the incident which happened at around 9am at the school gate.

Cornelius Masika, a mathematics and chemistry teacher, who graduated from the University of Nairobi in 2014 and officially employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in 2020 had financial difficulties and debts owed to multiple lending institutions.

According to the insider, the deceased committed suicide after being summoned by the school principal following the debtors’ request.

In May 2022, the TSC was put on spot by the teachers unions’ over the stagnant teachers’ wages which has not been adjusted despite an increase in the cost of living.

At that time, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), blamed the spike of suicide cases among teachers on a stagnant teachers’ salary which has remained constant despite the increase in the cost of living.
