Four people arrested for ferrying bhang to students at regional drama festivals

Judith Kerubo and Samuel Omondi, 29 years olds, were found with five bags of bhang in their car at the Sotik -Keroka highway in Borabu Constituency.

Police in Migori and Nyamira Counties have arrested four people ferrying several bags of bhang they suspect to be headed for various venues where students from Nyanza are having drama festivals.

According to the police, the suspected criminals were likely targeting students out for co-curricular activities at various destinations in Nyanza and Western regions.

Nyanza regional Drama and Film Festivals kicked off yesterday, March 19, at Kebirigo Boys High in Nyamira County and other student sporting activities have been going on concurrently in various parts of the country.

In one of the incidences, the police arrested two suspects Daniel Omondi and Eric Ombima who were in possession of six bags of bhang worth KSh9 million.

Police report indicated that the two suspects entered Kenya from the neighbouring Tanzania through Nyametaburo route and joined Isebania-Migori Highway.

The public informed the police at Isebania who followed them and intercepted them at Karamu Bridge where they arrested them after a long chase.

Migori Police Commander Francis Nguli confirmed arrest of the two suspects saying that the third one escaped but the two were assisting his officers with vital information that will lead to the arrest of the escapee.

In Nyamira County, the police arrested a woman and man with bhang at the Sotik -Keroka High way in Borabu Constituency.

According to police detectives, Samuel Omondi and Judith Kerubo both 29 years old were found with five bags of bhang in their car.

According to confidential report obtained from Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the suspects will be arraigned in court after comprehensive investigation report.

Parents from the region have now appealed to the police to tighten security over students against drug traffickers.

The parents said that most of those drug dealers target students at this time when they are out for co-curricular activities like sports and drama festivals.

“The illicit traders sneak into the festival and mingle freely with students selling the drugs to them without the teachers’ notice,” said one of the parents, James Mwikwabe.

Another parent, Joyce Bosibori Commended the new Kisii County police Commander Joseph Kibet who she said since his posting to the area two months ago, has brought sanity as far as security is concerned.

“In these days you cannot see our youths wandering with bottles of cheap beer in their hands,” she said.
