The Ministry of Education (MoE) has directed its County Directors of Education (CDEs) to give data of secondary schools without electricity in their areas of jurisdiction, so that the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) is able to connect them in a bid to achieve universal access to electricity across the sector.
In a letter dated March 6, 2024 signed by Paul Kibet on behalf of the Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang’, the education directors are requested to submit the data in both hard and soft copies to the ministry by March12, 2024.
Many schools in Kenya are still not connected to electricity, limiting their choice of subjects as they cannot do those that are dependent on electricity, like computer studies. There are also numerous cases of insecurity in those schools.
There is no accurate data on the number of schools that have not been connected to electricity.
However, before 2013, the rural electrification agency focussed on secondary schools according to its 2016-2021 strategic plan. 6,530 schools had been connected by June 2013.
The agency indicated that by June 2016, it had connected 8,259 secondary schools and 22,648 of the 23,401 public primary schools targeted.
According to data published by the MoE in 2019, there are 10,487 secondary schools in Kenya.
