Taita Taveta bursts into life as Secondary School Games kick off

Taita Taveta Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One games commenced smoothly in the early hours of Thursday March 7 at Voi Boys’ High in Voi Sub-county bringing together students from all the four sub counties of Mwatate, Wundanyi, Taveta and Voi.

The three-day showpiece being held in various venues including Voi Boys’ High and Mwambiti Secondary grounds comprise handball, basketball, hockey, rugby, cross-country and athletics.

Dr. Aggrey High School, the national secondary schools basketball champions is one of the notable team among others participating in the tourney. Timbila High is also among the schools to watch.

Preliminary matches are expected to continue tomorrow with playoffs and finals being staged on Saturday according to Taita Taveta KSSSA Secretary Lennox Mzae.

He said winners in the finals would proceed to the Regionals then Nationals expected to take place later during the year.

Mzae said the biggest challenge is insufficient funds given that some schools were not able to facilitate their student to participate.

He asked the government to streamline funding to enable many schools participate and nurture upcoming talents. “The major challenge we are facing now is finance. Parents are unable to pay for sports fees due to harsh economic conditions. We ask the Government to fast-track funding to enable many schools compete,” he said.

According to him, the county had two teams that participated in the East Africa competitions, Timbila and Dr Aggrey which he anticipates to perform well.

Shadrack Mutungi, the minister for sports in the county said that the administration is keen on nurturing talents through various sporting activities.

“As the country eyes the World Schools Cross Country sometimes to come, as a county, we will work together with teachers to ensure we get the best players in different sports that will represent the county in the match,” said Mutungi.

He noted that the county is committed to support sports association in the region by providing the officials with sporting uniforms as well as capacity building the teacher-coaches to ensure smooth running of sporting activities in the county.
