Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage Aisha Jumwa has officially commissioned Vihiga NGAAF GBV Rescue and Empowerment Centre to address the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence in the county.
The centre will provide psychosocial support services to GBV survivors in the region.
The CS said the fight against GBV is a government priority and is key to operationalizing the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto on women’s empowerment.
This is based on the realization that participation of women in key sectors of the country’s economy will improve their well-being and livelihoods.
Jumwa said the government will continue collaborating with the area MPs in ensuring that the plight of the vulnerable is adequately addressed through NGAAF funding.
During the function, the CS also handed over NGAAF bursary cheques to student beneficiaries in the county, the government having allocated Ksh1.5 billion through the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action to support various programmes across the 47 counties.
The allocation is also directed towards addressing financial needs of students from vulnerable families during the first and second quarters of the 2023/2024 Financial Year.
Part of the allocated funds, a total of Ksh273 million, is channeled towards supporting bursary and scholarship programmes for 25,000 students.
