Swimming outing turns tragic as two college students drown in river

Children swimming in a river in Nkuruman, Kajiado County. Students have been warned against swimming in rivers as two of them drowned in Meru.

A swimming expedition turned tragic when two students of Mitunguu Technical Training Institute drowned in  Thingithu River on the weekend.

One of the deceased boys, Kelvin Mawira, who was being taught how to do it, sank into the depths. As his colleague tried to rescue him, they both drown because the latter was probably too tired after swimming a good part of the afternoon.

It all happened at around 5PM on Saturday evening.

Other students who had accompanied them took to their heels while calling for assistance.

Residents said they heard the distress calls from the students but ignored them because they are used to them making loud noise when swimming.

They said if the students had alerted them on time of what exactly had happened, they would have been able to save the two.

Mitunguu Ward MCA Evans Mawira termed the area where the students drowned a black swimming spot where many people have perished and cautioned students against swimming there.
