How to start and sustain the culture of reading

Reading is one of those elite and cool hobbies one would love to add to their list. Like some leisure activities, reading aims at nourishing one’s critical thinking from an informed point of view. But just how do you start and sustain this habit?

At a time when technology is the in-thing, with social media accessible to everyone everywhere, it is easy to find blogposts and follow content well within your niche. Bloggers like Jackson Biko has seen his blog Bikozulu stand the test of time with admirable consistency on societal issues ranging from relationships to work to urban life, among others. Therefore, it is possible to use that cell phone and laptop to feed the brain useful information.

Another simple way to start reading is to read anthologies. These collection of short stories offer wider knowledge and information on numerous discourses. One thing for sure; you can never miss a favourite story in the fifteen or so literary works. A few examples of such books are: Encounters from Africa, Half a Day and Other Stories, When the Sun Goes Down and Other Stories, A Silent Song and Other Stories, etc.

The next way to begin reading easily is to start with a novella. A novella is basically a short novel or a long short story. These short novels are mostly read by children since they are easy to comprehend and don’t take long to finish reading as well. Schools that have taken their reading culture to the next level ask parents to buy class readers for students. The books- popularly referred to as Pacesetters- have surely set the pace to nurture the children’s reading culture. But that doesn’t lock out adults who want to venture this course. Better late than never. Right? Publishers who have been at the forefront championing for these books include; East Africa Educational Publishers, Penguin Classics, and Pacesetters, among many more.

Above all, read extensively. Read books on politics, economy, religion, sociology, psychology, science, religion, etc. Read books from Africa, Europe, Asia and every part of the world. Before you know it, you’d not want to put down that book you are reading on gravity. Defying Isaac Newton could be an extreme sport at this point, whether it is ten pages or a thousand more.

This can be a different and a steep mountain to climb. Making it to the top of the mountain might seem unattainable but never accept not giving it a try.
