Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has underscored the place of character formation in the education of children, noting that it is the foundation of growth.
“Education taken in isolation doesn’t make a person useful,” Machogu observed.
He made the observations when the chairman of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB)-Commission for Education and Religious Education, Bishop Paul Kariuki Njiru paid a courtesy call on him in his Office at Jogoo House.
Bishop Kariuki was accompanied by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Marsabit Rt. Rev. Bishop Peter Kihara.
In attendance were the Principal Secretary (PS) for Technical, Vocation Education and Training Dr Esther Muoria, Director General Dr Elyas Abdi and Director for Quality Assurance and StandardsEverline Owoko.
Machogu hailed the Catholic Church for nurturing and moulding millions of children in the schools under their patronage.
Bishop Kariuki, who is also the head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wote Diocese, thanked the government, recognizing the place of values and morals in the education of children.
“It is not just about education but also values children need,” he noted, saying the church wants to train teacher chaplains to participate in moulding learners.
“We need teachers who are well prepared to handle the pastoral needs of learners,” he said.
The ministry, in partnership with faith-based organizations, is working on a framework to provide chaplaincy services in basic education institutions.
