The M-PESA Foundation, through it’s Citizen of the Future Programme, has handed over newly constructed infrastructure in various public schools in Bungoma, Vihiga and Kakamega counties.
During an event presided over by President William Ruto accompanied by his deputy Rigathi Gachagwa, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, and Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, the Foundation’s Trustee Michael Joseph noted that their main aim is to boost learning especially in the rural underprivileged areas across the 47 counties.
He said they are targeting about 3 million students in the next three years.
“At Naitiri S.A Primary School, the Foundation has constructed and furnished eight classrooms, an ECDE centre, and an ablution block for both learners and staff. The Foundation also constructed and furnished an administration block, a kitchen, and set up a water harvesting system,” the Trustee said.

On his part, President Ruto said no child should stay at home for lack of school fees, noting that the national government has already disbursed Ksh7.5 billion in capitation, adding that plans are underway to employ more 20,000 teachers this year.
Elsewhere in Vihiga County, Gamoi Primary School had 20 classrooms renovated while a kitchen was constructed and furnished. Ablution blocks for both boys and girls were also constructed, and a water harvesting system installed.
In Kakamega County, Shitirira Primary School is set to enjoy enhanced water access after the Foundation funded the drilling of a borehole, an elevated water platform, water fetching points and a water kiosk for selling it to the neighbouring community.
Since its inception in 2010, M-PESA Foundation’s education programmes have benefitted over 1.3 million learners in all 47 counties through initiatives such as the M-PESA Foundation Academy, which enrolls and sponsors disadvantaged children.
Others who were present include Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and Tongaren MP John Murumba Chikati, among other leaders and residents.
