Little known Senye Secondary School in Migori County, Mihuru Bay Ward of Nyatike Constituency was among those that posted good results in the 2023 KCSE examinations.
The SDA-sponsored school beat the odds that were stacked against them to send 14 candidates to university for the first time since inception ten years ago.
It was on that remarkable achievement that the sponsor organized a thanksgiving ceremony in the school presided over by Pr. Lamech Ogete and his host Pr. Collins Omondi, who encouraged students to fear God because He is the beginning of knowledge.
The principal Evans Magembe narrated the long story of success that came after years of hard work, thanking delocalization that brought him to the school four years ago where he started an aggressive enrollment campaign.
“My first approach with my teachers was to ask parents to change their attitude of preferring fishing to learning,” he said.
In 2022, the school improved in the mean score from 2.6 to 3.36, but did not send any of the candidates to university.
In 2023, however, from the 67 registered candidates, 14 scored C+ and above, two of whom had B+.
The principal attributed the good performance to team work between his deputy George Otina, teachers, parents and students.
The principal said that despite of problems like shortage of water, reluctance of parents to pay school fees, some cases of drug abuse and teenage pregnancies, he was determined to steer the school to greater academic achievements.
Nicolas Odhiambo Ngome and David Omundo Adao, the top students, had good things to say about the school.
“Our teachers monitored us closely by marking our homework and exposing us to various examination setting techniques, and with practice we gained confidence,” Ngome said.
Mihuru Bay Location Senior Chief Olgah Otieno, who attended the meeting, lauded teachers and students for making them proud.
She thanked the Board of Management (BoM) and teachers for navigating through all odds to push the institution up and stand counted among good performers in Nyatike Constituency.
She promised to arrest adults who lure school girls with money into sexual escapades before running away after impregnating them.
She also asked girls not to portray themselves as cheap sexual objects.
