Nyamira County politicians have been asked to lay aside their political differences and work towards the establishment of their own university.
Kisii County Education Board chairman Prof Henry Onderi said politicians come and go but learning institutions will remain to nourish, shape and foster communities.
The don was reacting to the recent acrimony among Borabu, Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba and North Mugirango legislators over the location of the university as everyone wanted the institution built in his constituency.
Onderi, who spoke to Education News in Nyamira town, asked the politicians to leave education matters to planning experts to avoid unforeseen mishaps.
“All of us have a place to serve but all of us can fit in one situation,” he said.
Giving the examples of the growth of Kisii town as a result of the presence of a university, Onderi told communities to embrace positive change instead of falling over each other when an opportunity for development comes.
Saying that any learning institution needs enough space for construction and good communication network for easy accessibility, Prof Onderi asked the planners to bear these factors in mind to guide them on the suitable location of the university.
His sentiments were echoed by many residents who saw the need for leaders setting good examples for others.
The residents asked the current leaders to toe the foundation laid by their predecessors like Senator John Kebaso, Henry Obwocha, George Anyona and Governor John Nyagarama who lived their stints fulfilling the wish of their people instead of self-gratification.
