TVET institutions have been asked to register their commercial products with the country’s standardization authorities such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) to avoid legal suits in future.
Dr Esther Thaara Muoria, the TVET Principal Secretary (PS), asked principals of these institutions to familiarize themselves with standardization and classification rules or risk legal action for sub-standard products.
The institutions should also familiarize with required local, regional and international standards before releasing their trainees to work in various organizations.
Speaking during a tour of the various innovation hubs at Muraga Technical Training Institute in Tharaka Nithi County before presiding over its inaugural graduation event, the PS took issue with some institutions failing to seek approvals before releasing products into the market.
The institute’s principal, however, assured the PS that the process of acquiring various standardization approvals had begun and would be available to the production units soon.
The PS termed the entrepreneurial innovations at the college as a noble venture which is set to encourage more partnerships geared towards bringing positive change in the lives of the local people.
She called for readiness by the TVET sector to embrace the newly introduced Competency-Based Curriculum Education and Training (CBET) in an effort to skill the nation and address identified gaps in the labour market.
“The implementation of CBET in our institutions is angled at ensuring that TVET institutions produce students who are fully skilled and ready for the market,” said Muoria, noting that the new training is geared towards equipping TVET trainees with the hands-on industry skills where students train with, in and for industry.
She said uninterrupted access to training facilities in various technical institutions is bound to boost profitable use of the various Income Generating Units (IGU) established in TVET institutions, clearly referring to the new programme where TVET doors are open throughout the year.
The PS took note of the successful initiatives at the Muraga TTI, saying they are a clear indication of the superb training going on at the facility.
