Kuresoi South legislator Joseph Tonui has decried the shortage of teachers in the area, lamenting that the situation has undermined efforts to improve academic standards in the area.
He said this when he toured the constituency.
“This area is grappling with the shortage of teachers. This problem has impacted negatively on our education levels. As area MP, I will be pushing for TSC to take action,” he said.
He attributed the shortage to the mass movement of teachers out of the area following the removal of the delocalization policy, which has forced parents to hire teachers for their schools.
“Many teachers left Kuresoi South after delocalization was lifted. Unfortunately, TSC has not brought back our teachers serving in other regions. Understaffing has forced parents to dig deep into their pockets to hire teachers. This is against the government’s free education promise,” added Tonui.
Tonui, a teacher by profession, now wants the Teachers Service Commission to urgently address the problem.
Parents echoed the sentiments, saying the area has been neglected over the years.
The MP also commended national exams candidates for the stellar performance despite the difficulties around understaffing. According to him, the number of students joining university this year has doubled as compared to last year.
