Elgeyo Marakwet JSS teachers to boycott work if not hired permanently

JSS intern teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet have vowed to boycott work unless the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employs them on permanent and pensionable terms.

Led by Ann Kirui, they dismissed the Sh17,000 salary as peanuts, saying the amount is too little considering the cost of living and the work they do.

Speaking in Iten town, the JSS teachers faulted the announcement that they will be confirmed in 2025, saying they are experienced and should not wait that long.

“We demand that we are employed on permanent terms. As JSS teachers, we want to tell the government that unless this is done, we will not go to work,” said Kirui.

They said unless TSC shelves plan to keep them on contract for another year and give them permanent terms, all JSS teachers in the region will go on strike.

Emmy Kurgat claimed confirmations were going on secretly, adding that it was unfair to confirm recently graduated individuals, leaving out those who had been out for many years.

“We have information that employment on permanent terms is going on secretly. How could you employ an individual who graduated recently and leave out a teacher who graduated many years ago? This is so shameful and inhuman,” noted Kurgat.

The tutors now want President William Ruto to reconsider the matter, arguing that permanent employment will boost their morale and enable them work well.

TSC sealed the fate of the teachers, who have served for one year, when it announced that they will be confirmed on permanent terms in 2025.
