KNEC on the spot again as KCSE markers await allowances to get back home

Dr. David Njengere, KNEC CEO, is already embroiled in another tussle as teachers who marked KCSE are stranded in Nairobi because they have not been paid their allowances, barely weeks after controversies around errors in KCPE.

A section of teachers who were marking the KCSE exam are stranded in Nairobi after KNEC failed to pay the advance plus transport allowance as agreed.

“Examiners were promised an advance payment of Ksh25,000 plus a transport allowance after the marking exercise,” a teacher said.

Our source says that yesterday, History Paper 1 and 2 examiners were informed that the money was going to be wired to their accounts while on their way home.

“Up to now, some of us are stranded in Nairobi waiting for money promised by KNEC to reflect in our accounts,” a teacher said.

Another teacher added, “To make matters worse, KNEC has not seen it prudent to make a communication explaining the delay.”

Others said KNEC has failed to treat teachers with dignity and should be included in the list of agencies set to be privatized by the government for proper management.

“Those who were marking English paper 3 too haven’t received a penny and are now begging for fare back home after the exercise,” another teacher said.

The critical phase of marking the KCSE 2023 exams was from November 27 to December 11, 2023 at designated KNEC marking centres. The task of marking was carried out by KCSE examiners, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the evaluation process.

The results are slated to be public from December 16 to 22, 2023 at KNEC headquarters, known as Mitihani House.
