2024 scholarships announced for people living with disabilities

The National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has announced scholarships for individuals with disabilities for the year 2024.

The Ustawi Education Scholarships is part of a larger programme known as Tunza Career Guidance and Mentorship Programme, which aims to provide support and guidance to students with disabilities.

These scholarships are made possible through various funding sources, including Faulu, Wezesha, KPC Inuka, KCB Foundation and Hellen McGowan scholarships.

The main objective of these educational scholarships is to empower individuals with disabilities by creating more opportunities for them in education, training and rehabilitation institutions.

Financial support can be applied for by individuals or their guardians to cover fees for secondary and tertiary education, vocational training, vocational rehabilitation centres, universities and special educational establishments.

However, the scholarships do not cover funding for Masters and PhD programmes.

The amount funded by the scholarships is specifically for tuition fees and may also include boarding expenses, as stated on the council’s website.

The scholarships cover up to 75 per cent of the course fees, with the applicant expected to cover the remaining 25 per cent. If the applicant is employed, they are required to cover 50 per cent of the fees.

In exceptional cases, the fund may cover up to 100 of the fees, but the applicant will need to provide additional evidence of extreme poverty.

Harun Hassan, the Council Executive Director, says the shift from bursaries to full scholarships is aimed at ensuring that students with disabilities are able to stay in school, successfully transition between educational levels, and ultimately complete their education.

This change in approach is intended to provide more comprehensive support to these students throughout their education journey.

He urged students to seize the available opportunities, emphasizing the mentorship programme as a significant chance to equip learners with skills, confidence and hope, enabling them to become valuable leaders in our society.

In addition to the scholarship, the council is dedicated to connecting students with disabilities to mentors who can help them achieve their unique goals and aspirations through the Tunza programme.

The application forms can be accessed through the National Development Fund for Persons With Disabilities (NPFPWD) website.
