Kisumu Governor urges govt to ease revenue burdens on youth

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has urged the government to explore alternative methods of raising revenue to repay debts, rather than imposing additional burdens on citizens especially the youth.

In a press statement, Nyong’o emphasized the need for both the Executive and Parliament to engage in comprehensive discussions on the taxation matter, which he believes is adversely affecting the lives of Kenyans.

“Even the youth who want to marry are being taxed,” he lamented.

Expressing surprise at the government’s announcement of plans to increase taxes for debt repayment, Nyong’o criticized the move, stating that the taxes were not intended for investment and wealth creation but solely for debt servicing.

He questioned the logic of taxing individuals and businesses after purportedly creating wealth and generating employment.

Nyong’o cited the economic strategies of the British Prime Minister, advocating for tax cuts to stimulate growth, wealth creation, and employment in Great Britain.

Drawing a parallel, he recalled the successful approach adopted by the NARC government in 2002, focusing on “wealth and employment creation.”

The governor highlighted the simplicity of their taxation policy, which involved reducing tax rates and expanding the tax base to include more individuals and businesses.

This, according to Nyong’o, resulted in reduced per-unit taxes for Kenyans while significantly increasing government revenue.
