Text Book Centre (TBC), the foremost distributor of Educational, Cultural, and Technological Content and Products in East and Central Africa, has marked a significant milestone by inaugurating its 12th branch in Western Kenya.

Speaking during the launch, CEO Sachin Varma highlighted the remarkable growth TBC has experienced over the years, solidifying its status as Kenya’s leading bookstore chain.

With a focus on education, TBC has played a pivotal role by distributing educational books to students at all levels, earning recognition in-store, corporately, and online, especially during the primary back-to-school season.

Varma emphasized the critical role of education in Kenya’s socio-economic growth, pointing out that the country’s development is driven by agriculture, tourism, services, and manufacturing.

He stressed the need for an effective Human Resources Development (HRD) system aligned with the labor market to harness new opportunities and achieve development goals.

Acknowledging the significant budget allocation to the education sector for the 2023-24 financial year, Varma highlighted TBC’s contribution through diverse services like retail, wholesale, and e-commerce.

These services ensure the distribution of educational books and materials across the country.

Varma celebrated the transformative changes in Kenya’s publishing landscape, crediting collaborative efforts from authors, publishers, and literary enthusiasts for fostering a vibrant and inclusive industry.

He expressed optimism for a future characterized by new narratives, fresh voices, and a sustained commitment to the written word.

TBC’s expansion into Kisumu has not only created over 20 direct jobs but also generated numerous indirect employment opportunities.

Varma underscored TBC’s commitment to providing more than just educational books, extending to stationery, art, and technology.

He assured customers of genuine computer items with after-sales service, reinforcing the company’s dedication to customer satisfaction.

CECM John Awiti of the Department of Education, Technical Training, Innovation, and Social Services expressed excitement about TBC’s arrival in Kisumu.

He noted the positive impact on the county’s education ecosystem, especially in early childhood development.

Awiti highlighted Kisumu’s status as a regional educational hub, serving primary, secondary, and tertiary schools within and beyond the county.

In collaboration with Kisumu’s First Lady, Dorothy Nyong’o, the county has been running an Early Childhood Development (ECD) project to promote learning and reading from an early age. The new TBC branch is expected to enhance access to relevant books, further enriching the educational landscape in Kisumu.
