Africa International University (AIU) has announced the appointment of Rev. Dr Nelson Makanda as its new Vice Chancellor (VC).
The decision was officially ratified by the University Council Chairman Dr Nelson Kuria, MBS, OGW, F.IOD (K), in a letter dated November 30, 2023.
Dr Makanda, a distinguished Christian leader with a remarkable career spanning over 25 years in leadership roles within churches, para-church organizations and communities, brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
Currently serving as the General Secretary and CEO of the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya, a prominent ecumenical movement for evangelicals in the country, Dr Makanda has held various roles, including pastor, middle-level manager and deputy CEO.
His leadership journey includes extensive involvement in transformational leadership, resource mobilization and turnaround strategies.
Dr Makanda has actively contributed to several committees and taskforces in Kenya, notably the Academic Committee of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Prof Fatuma Chege-led Competency-Based Curriculum Taskforce on Enhancing Access, Relevance, Transition, Equity, and Quality for Effective Curriculum Reforms Implementation in Kenya.
Having previously served on the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of AIU, Dr Makanda currently holds the position of Chair of the AIU Alumni.
His commitment to community transformation through higher education, ethical governance and leadership for the public and common good aligns seamlessly with AIU’s vision.
Dr Makanda holds academic qualifications that reflect his dedication to knowledge and education.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Egerton University, a Master’s in Biblical Studies from the then Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology (NEGST), and a PhD from Africa International University.
An ordained evangelical minister, Dr Makanda is renowned for his insightful speeches on various subjects.
Dr Makanda is set to assume his role as VC in January 2024.
