Teachers threaten to down tools if JSS teachers are not confirmed

JSS intern teachers in a recent demonstration. There is a rising agitation across the country for teachers to go on strike if they are not confirmed as permanent and pensionable.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) has threatened to down tools if their colleagues in Junior Secondary School (JSS) will not be employed by the TSC on permanent and pensionable terms.

Nyamira Branch Executive Secretary Lawrence Nyakweba said the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was hoodwinking the teachers, asking it to honour the terms of service.

He argued that TSC employed the JSS teachers last year and expected it to confirm them having served for one year.

“We are not happy with these teachers being treated like casual labourers and we shall seek industrial court advice,” he said.

The secretary, who addressed the public in Nyamira town during the world Aids Day, gave the commission one month notice to confirm the teachers of face industrial action.

“Let parents prepare to take their children to private schools when schools reopen next year because the government has mistreated teachers,” he said.

The government employed teachers last year and they have been working under contract terms in JSS, which is hosted in the primary school.
