Elgeiyo Marakwet JSS teachers demand permanent employment

Elgeyo Marakwet Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers have demanded the government to honor its commitment of granting them permanent employment.

Led by the Branch Secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Paul Biwott, the educators underlined the violation of labor laws by extending casual employment beyond six months.

Being pioneers in the JSS system, they adamantly refused to endorse new contracts, emphasizing the assurance they had received for permanent positions.

Citing the incongruity between their monthly salary of Ksh. 19,000 and the substantial workload they shoulder, the teachers emphasized the government’s obligation to fulfill its promise.

Additionally they argued that given their foundational role in the JSS, it is only equitable for the government to acknowledge their contributions.

Biwott advocated for the relocation of JSS students to existing secondary schools boasting adequate facilities.

He further called for a revision of the teachers’ terms before January next year, asserting that the union would diligently monitor the situation.
