The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called upon the President to initiate an overhaul of the Ministry of Education(MoE), emphasizing the need to safeguard the integrity of national examinations.
Speaking at his Kisumu office, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET, Kisumu Branch, Zablon Awange, expressed concern over the credibility of ongoing examinations, highlighting instances of early exposure via platforms like WhatsApp.
Awange criticized the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the MoE for what he termed as the inadequate management of the exams, accusing them of conducting sham tests.
He further urged a return to the examination methods employed by former Education Cabinet Secretaries, the late George Magoha and Fred Matiangi, asserting that these methods ensured the credibility of national exams.
“There should be a reversion to the previous practice of having primary school teachers supervises Form Four examinations,” Awange emphasized.
He lamented the targeting of exam center managers from Nyanza region, attributing it to mere suspicions and criticized the Ministry of Education for alleged harassment.
“The ongoing examinations risks being discredited due to issues such as early exposure, poor weather conditions, and deficient infrastructure,” Awange noted.
He additionally underscored the importance of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in eliminating cutthroat competition and unorthodox methods of obtaining high grades, asserting that these practices often disadvantaged deserving students.
Awange further cautioned that some students obtaining undeserved ‘A’ grades through the current system might not perform adequately in various sectors across the country.
