KCSE exams delayed for 5 schools in Meru as floods cut off roads

The incessant rainfall in Meru County has disrupted the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations for five schools in Tigania East sub-county.

The sub-county education officer Simon Londiangule identified the affected schools as Lailuba, Kiremu, Ntulili, and Laibucha.

“Torrential rains have resulted in severe flooding, rendering the roads nearly impassable and causing logistical challenges in transporting exam papers to the affected institutions,” he stated.

Londiangule called on the government to explore alternative delivery methods, suggesting the use of helicopters to transport exam papers to the stranded schools.

“As a consequence of the weather-induced road closures, some candidates find themselves compelled to spend the night at their respective schools to ensure they do not miss any examination sessions,” he lamented.

The officer emphasized that students in these institutions must patiently await a reduction in water levels before the exams can proceed.

Londiangule noted that he ha communicated the challenges to senior officials of the examination body and is awaiting further directives and assistance.

A field assessment revealed that the adverse weather conditions have forced police, head teachers, and invigilators of the affected schools to seek refuge in nearby homes.

Micheni Luthiri, the principal of Kiremu Day Secondary School, reported that heavy rainfall over the past three days has led to road closures and difficult access in the region.

Joseph Kailikia, a concerned resident, echoed the community’s plea for urgent intervention, proposing the use of helicopters to expedite the delivery of exam papers.

Locals highlighted that, in response to the challenging conditions, many schools in the semi-arid area have arranged for candidates to stay overnight on school premises to ensure their participation in the examinations despite the ongoing inclement weather.
