Govt asked to relieve teachers by withdrawing one insurance cover

Bungoma KNUT executive secretary Kenneth Ng'ang'a

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT)’s Bungoma branch has called on the government to withdraw one of two insurance schemes to relief teachers of the heavy financial burden placed on them.

Speaking to the press in Bungoma on Wednesday, Bungoma County KNUT Executive Secretary Kenneth Ng’ang’a said the burden was becoming too much for teachers to bear.

“The doubled deductions have become a burden to the teachers; that is why KNUT is asking the government to do away with one scheme to give teachers easy time,” he said.

Ng’ang’a praised the government for employing additional 55,000 teachers. However, he said Bungoma is still in dire need of over 3,000 teachers.

Meanwhile, legislators in Bungoma are now calling on the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to be fair while marking and awarding marks.

Kanduyi MP John Makali urged the KNEC to seal all loopholes at the council, saying that they do not want to see the problems experienced last year during the release of the national exam results.

“I’m asking KNEC to be fair to these students. Let them be given marks which they deserve,” Makali said.

His Kabuchai counterpart Majimbo Kalasinga said that KNEC should not let down learners, teachers and parents.

“We don’t want the marking that will undermine our children the way we saw last year. These parents have invested heavily in them and they want to see and enjoy the fruits of their children,” Kalasinga said.
